What to do if an accident happens?
If an accident occurs, take steps to prevent further damage and to ensure general safety.
If no one was injured in the traffic accident and all parties agree on who caused it, the accident must be documented on the spot and signed by all parties. The easiest way to do this is by filling out the “Traffic Accident Report” form (Estonian only), either on paper or electronically, including:
- a description of the incident with a sketch;
- the drivers’ and vehicles’ details;
- the names of the insurance companies;
- confirmation that both drivers agree with what has been written down.
After documenting the accident and signing the form, you may leave the scene with the vehicles. Before driving off, make sure it is safe to drive the vehicle.
Call the Emergency Response Centre at 112 if:
- someone was injured in the accident. If you are able to, provide first aid to the injured;
- the people involved do not agree on who is at fault;
- the owner of the damaged property is unknown, for example if you hit a traffic sign, a fence, or another vehicle in a car park;
- the person who caused the damage has left the scene;
- the accident involved hitting an animal or avoiding one.
If an accident has happened to your car, we take care of all the paperwork with the insurance companies for you. In the event of a traffic accident or other insurance claim, please contact our service centre to register the claim.
Documents required for claims handling:
- ✔ Vehicle registration certificate
- ✔ Proof of driving licence for the driver at the time of the accident (driving licence, passport, or ID card)
- ✔ Power of attorney, if using the vehicle under authorisation
- ✔ Insurance policy or details of the insurance company where a valid policy has been taken out
- ✔ Any other documents that may be related to the case.
Documents required for traffic accident claims:
- ✔ Completed form: "Traffic Accident Report".
- ✔ Vehicle registration certificate
- ✔ Proof of driving licence for the driver at the time of the accident (driving licence, passport, or ID card)
- ✔ Power of attorney, if using the vehicle under authorisation
- ✔ Traffic insurance policy
- ✔ Any other documents that may be related to the case.
The procedure for handling traffic accidents is regulated by Regulation No. 68 of the Government of the Republic of Estonia.
